Our Story

The Hudson Bay Company established many fur trading posts across the north back in the 1800's.The red shingled buildings supplied almost everything a family would need for survival in the north. Without roads, the entire winter supply would be barged ashore and stored in warehouses and sold as needed until the resupply next season. At one time the community of North West River, established in 1743, was the main center for healthcare, education and commerce.

At one time the community of North West River, established in 1743, was the main center for healthcare, education and commerce.

In 1972 the Hudsons Bay Company decided to build a new and modern 7600sq metal clad store to better serve the people, which it did. When the bridge came thru in 1982, on a promise of prosperity, instead changed to the opposite. The biggest loss was the the closure of North West River Hospital and all the jobs which served the community for more than 100 years abruptly ended. In 1992 the communities only grocery store was closed.

In the year 2020, the owner, Collin Roland Baikie (CRB), took it upon himself to independently renovate the entire building and bring back an essential food service to this northern and remote community at the end of the open road. The last stop. Built and opened during the covid 19 pandemic, CRB Supermarket, similar to the HBC model, today offers a consistent supply of modern groceries, a mix of northern hardware supplies along with acoustic guitars and musical supplies. The Riverside Restaurant, under the same roof, is open daily and offers eat in and take out services. We are pleased to help improve the quality of life for the Labrador indigenous and non indigenous people who live around us and visit our store.
